World Standard Unit Of Measure

System International (SI)

"Le Systeme international d'Unites" officially came into being in October 1960 as the world standard of measurement, and has been officially recognized and adopted by nearly all countries.  However, the amount of actual usage varies considerably.   It is based upon 7 principal units of measure; one in each of seven different categories.

SI

Category Name Abbreviation
Length metre m
Mass kilogram kg
Time second s
Electric current ampere A
Temperature kelvin K
Amount of substance mole mol
Luminous intensity candela cd

Metric System of Measurements

Length Is Measured In Meters

1/1000 of a meter .001 Meter = 1 Millimeter (mm)
1/100 of a meter .01 Meter = 1 Centimeter (cm)
1/10 of a meter .001 Meter = 1 Decimeter
1 Meter (m) 1 Standard Unit Of Measure For Length
10 Meters = 1 Decameter
100 Meters = 1 Hectometer
1000 Meters = 1 Kilometer (km)

Area Measurement (2-Dimensional Measurement; Flat = 1 Plane Of Measure)

1 Square Centimeter = 100 Square Millimeter (mm)
1 Square Meter = 10000 Square Centimeters
1 Are = 100 Square Meter (sq m)
1 Hectare = 100 Ares
1 Hectare = 10000 sq. m
1 Square Kilometer = 100 Hectares
1 Square Kilometer = 1,000,000 Square Meters

Volume Measurement (3-Dimensional Measurement; 3 Flat Planes Of Measure Of A Cubed Volume)
1/1000 of a Cubic Meter 1 Cubic Millimeter
1/100 of a Cubic Meter 1 Cubic Centimeter = 1000 Cubic Millimeters
1/10 of a Cubic Meter 1 Decimeter = 1000 Cubic Centimeters
1 Cubic Meter 1 Standard Unit Of Measure For Volume; = 1000 Cubic Decimeters
1 Cubic Meter 1 Million Cubic Centimeters
The S I unit of volume is the cubic meter.

However, this seems to be much less used than the liter (1000 liters = 1 cubic meter).  In 1964, it was ruled that the word "liter" may be employed as a special name for the cubic decimeter, with the additional recommendation that for really accurate work, to avoid any possible confusion, the liter should not be used.

1/100 of a Liter 1 Centiliter
1/10 of a Liter 1 Deciliter
1 Liter (l) (Litre) 1 Standard Unit Of Measure
1000 Liters 1 Cubic Meter

Mass Measurement (Weight)
1/10 of a Gram 1 Decigram
1 Gram (g) 1 Standard Unit Of Measure For Mass
1000 Grams 1 Kilogram (kg)
1000000 Grams 1 Metric Tone (Tonne) = 1000 Kilograms
